The Dos and Don’ts of Diabetes

People suffering from diabetes often fail to keep up with the list of dos and don’ts of this disease. A lot of stress along with much confusion about what should be done and what should be avoided is created.  We have managed to gather information from various sources and have come up with a few key points to manage your blood sugar levels.

There are mainly 3 types of diabetes, type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes. More than 90% of the diabetes population have type 2 diabetes, which is the most common type. In a majority of the cases, it is seen that this type of diabetes occurs due to the unhealthy lifestyle. But some cases are countered due to other reasons like family history, infection etc.


  1. Balance your Meals

Diet is one of the most important aspects that control diabetes. Planning it effectively will let you follow a proper diet chart. Know the food you eat and know the food you are supposed to eat. Replace fatty food with whole grains, fibre, and carbohydrates. Balance your food with 25% carbs, 25% proteins and 50% vegetables/fruits. Human body nutrients needs differ from person to person based on the caloric requirement of the body. Watch your body needs and plan your meals accordingly.

2. Exercise

Start exercising as soon as you are diagnosed with this disease. At least 30 minutes of any exercise that makes you sweat is beneficial to control your blood sugar level.

3. Doctor Visits

Visit your doctor 2 3 times a year to know the condition of your internal organs. The excess level of blood sugar level is likely to damage organs. Keeping track of cholesterol, blood pressure etc. will help in avoiding the risks of this disease.

4. Never Stop Learning

Knowing about new things always helps. Thus, gaining knowledge about the disease you are suffering from will help in discarding the myths and prevent the severe medical condition. Consulting a team of experts or joining diabetes awareness program will help tremendously.


  1. Don’t stop medication Unless Told

If you are suffering from diabetes no matter type 1, type 2 or gestational, you should not stop or change any medicine on your own without consulting your doctor. It may increase your blood sugar levels to an extent.

2. Don’t take Foods with High Glycemic Index

Do not intake food with higher sugar amount present like sodas, candies, cake etc. Avoid fruits like mango, banana, and chickoo as they have a high glycemic index.

3. Do not overdo Exercise

Do not exercise more than required. Due to heavy medication and proper diet control, if a patient does the physical exercise more than required, he/she may experience a Hypoglycemia (sudden reduction in blood sugar), weakness, joint pains etc.

With proper knowledge about what to do and what not to do will prevent you from several complications caused due to diabetes.
